Department of Genetics, AIIMS, New Delhi, February 2017

Along with Tanya Collin-Histed, CEO of the UK Gauchers Association, I visited the Department of Genetics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi on the 25th of February 2017. This was my third visit in almost as many years after my graduation as a postgraduate in paediatrics nearly 30 years ago!

We were guests of Prof Madhulika Kabra, head of the department, and her colleague Dr Neerja Gupta. The department has recently become recognized for the DM (Medical Genetics) course.

We conducted a clinic, which was followed by a couple of  interactive lectures. Both sessions were lively and intense, with excellent participation by the postgraduates and DM students.

We also met with Mr Manjit Singh, CEO of the Lysosomal Storage Disorders Support Society (LSDSS) who has been campaigning tirelessly for treatment and other support for LSD patients in India.

I have had a lifelong interest in lysosomal storage disorders. Having recently retired I now have time to pursue my passion for teaching and training of young doctors and scientists, and hopefully instil in them the passion for their patients that is so integral to working in this field.
